Welcome to Year 2's Class Page
Year 2 marks the last year of KS1 and it is a very fun, exciting and busy year. Your child will learn lots of take part in the many exciting opportunities linked to our three themes – Dangerous Dinosaurs, Flaming Fires and Peckish Pirates. Also, your child will be preparing for their KS1 SATs assessments which they will take later in May. Make sure to keep updated and follow our school’s Twitter page, @ourladyqop, to find out more about our school learning.
Daily reading is expected every night. Your child will independently change their reading book three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). On Tuesday and Thursday please take the opportunity to re-read the school reading book and ask and answer questions to improve comprehension skills.
Due to the current pandemic, Year 2 children are required to sit the statuory Phonics Screening Check - originally intended to be completed in the Year 1 Summer Term. However, the children will now sit this in the second half of the Autumn Term. Resources and activities will be sent out closer to the date to support the children in passing the compulsory check.
Homework (Maths, Grammar and Spelling) is given out on a Friday and is due in the following Wednesday. There will be a Spelling Test every Friday covering the high frequency words, Year 1 and 2 common exception words and Year 2 phonic words. Scores for Spelling Tests will be shared with parents via the Spelling Records provided at the start of the year.
As of September, children are expected to come to school in PE kit on Wednesday. On Friday we will be going swimming so please make sure you come to school wearing your swimming costume under your school uniformand bring a towel to dry yourself after. Please be advised that all jewellery must be removed for PE lessons.
In the first Autumn Term, your child will also be participating in Forest School sessions every Tuesday afternoon. In line with COVID-19 guidance, children will be attended Forest School in their school uniform. Please make sure your child however has wellies and a warm coat for the Tuesday sessions.
Please also practise times tables regular focussing on the 2x, 5x and 10x tables as this will support your child before being introduced to Times Table Rockstars later in the Spring Term.
